Who we are:
couple of G’s
The Gray Family history is long and storied with a tree full of swashbucklers, veterans, patriots, noblemen, knights and more…
Charles L Gray Sr. born and raised in Los Angeles County, California. A U.S. Army service connected disabled veteran, worked as a diesel mechanic for the City of San Diego Fire department when he purchased a Red Mountain Engineering Diesel Smoke Opacity Tester and in 1998 started a sole proprietorship: “Gray and Sons Fleet Inspections" providing mobile opacity snap testing under California Air Resources Board’s “Periodic Smoke Inspection Program”.
Charles had a good run but eventually retired from opacity testing. Some time had passed and in 2024 the Periodic Smoke Inspection Program was retired as well. In the winter of 2025 Charles had a Motor-home that required opacity testing under C.A.R.B.’s new “Clean Truck Check” program. After calling around to a few shops and hearing the outrageous prices quoted to as much as $500 a test, and at least one bogus tester that claimed he didn’t need the vehicle present to pass the test, that was it. Charles decided it was time to come out of retirement
Samuel P. Gray, born and raised in Los Angeles County, California. A U.S. Army service connected disabled veteran, at the age of 16 started riding along with his father, learning the industry, performing opacity snap tests, and helping by formatting the digital readouts from tests into printable files he put into folders along with the original print out to provide customers with a compliance package rather than just a rolled up easy to lose receipt.
At the age of 18 Sam had moved away. Now 42, was back home visiting from Virginia and after a quick discussion with his father, they both decided to become certified testers under the new “Clean Truck Check Heavy Duty / Industrial Maintenance Program”. Following his fathers entrepreneurial spirit, Sam started filing the necessary paperwork needed to get “G 2 G OTR” off the ground and also invested in the necessary hardware and software required to conduct the newly implemented OBD emissions inspections using Drew Technologies’ DrewLinQ paired with a Windows 11 tablet running RA-Automotive’s Silver Snap Tool.
